Ask Terry Questions 2nd economic stimulus on a debit card

2nd economic stimulus on a debit card

By Terry Savage on January 26, 2021 | Wild Card

Hi Terry,
I received an Economic impact payment card saying that it is from the US Treasury in the mail instead
of a check for my second stimulus payment. I called the number on the card to activate it (1800-240-8100)
It is asking for the last 6 digits of my social security number. Is this a real debit card from the government?
I am concerned as there is so much fraud going on. I tried the IRS website and there is no info on the activation.
Thanks for your help

Terry Says

Is it for the exact $600 stimulus payment? If so, then you can give the last four digits — but not the complete — number of your SS to activate the card. Then withrawa ALL the money and put it into your checking or savings account in the bank.
The IRS is using several different debit cards, I’ve found. And it’s not surprising that people are concerned after the unsolicited, fraud-based unemployment card scam.
