Adult college students/ insurance/Medicaid
My son worked at ikea for about 10 years between his BS and MS. He went back to school for his masters of public health. After completing classes this March he was supposed to find an internship ( the school doesn’t assist with that.) He quit his job on March 16 in anticipation of securing an internship which is non existent due to Covid. The university still says you’re on your own and only offered 2 suggestions to the entire class. He is now , still searching for an internship without guidance, with typical bills, car, housing, food, college tuition. What suggestions/ recourse should he focus on. Additionally, he is now without insurance. Because he quit the job does he have any avenues to look at besides public aid and Medicaid? Thank you.

Whew, talk about bad timing!
Let’s talk health insurance first. That’s really important. He should immediately go to www.eHealthInsurance.com and purchase a short-term policy. It won’t be expensive, it will start immediately, and as long as he is currently healthy it should be an easy fix.
Second, forget “internships” — the definition of an internship is UNPAID work experience!
He needs a job! And he needs to focus on getting one soon — because since he quit his old job he won’t qualify for unemployment benefits.
It doesn’t matter what degree he has at this point. If he can get a job working in the health field (he should be in demand there) he must START EARNING MONEY NOW!
I don’t know if his school will resume, but how on earth can he live (even at your house) without earning some money to contribute to expenses. My own sense, is that this Covid thing is going to last longer than anyone expects and impact job openings for a very long time.
Now is the time to readjust his perspective — and yours — to the current reality. ANY job that pays him is better than his situation now!
