Ask Terry Questions back child support

back child support

By Terry Savage on December 29, 2020 | Wild Card

my son did not receive a Stimulus check in 2019. The reason given was because of back child support from his wife’s past life in Alaska before being married to him. The IRS has been taking a portion of their return for 2 years. Child Support Services said this is legal and divorce is his only answer. They live in Florida and the support goes back 30 years. I have never seen this addressed in any explanation of Stimulus pay outs. Is this legal and fair?

Terry Says

This was a big issue in Spring when the first stimulus was passed in the CAres bill. Many said it unfairly targeted second marriages, while others said “deadbeats” should pay up! I am waiting to see if this provision applies to the second stimulus and will post a comment when I find out.
