Ask Terry Questions Backdoor ROTH Conversion

Backdoor ROTH Conversion

By Terry Savage on March 03, 2026 | Financial Planning / Retirement

For 2025, my wife and I earned over $252k for the first time. We did not make any IRA contributions for 2025 yet. Can we make Backdoor ROTH contributions for 2025? And moving forward, can we assume we’ll make over next years limit and do another Backdoor ROTH for 2026 in the next month or so? We like to make our contributions early in the year instead of waiting till the following year. Are there any ramifications to making IRA contributions this way? We have both ROTH and Traditional IRA accounts and have been starting to do some ROTH Conversions in the Traditional IRA account as well. Thank you in advance for your advice.

I hesitate to advise on this because your situations are complex. And beyond taxes, Medicare premiums might be involved.
