Ask Terry Questions Bonds in 401k

Bonds in 401k

By Terry Savage on November 25, 2013 | Investments

The bond portion of my 401k is in Vanguard Total Bond Market fund. I do not plan on withdrawing this bond money for at least 5 years. I am 56 currently. Do you recommend continuing to keep my bond money in this fund or move to short term bonds or a money market fund?

Terry Says:  The Vanguard Total Bond fund invests in all maturities of high quality corporate and government bonds.  The fact that it has some shorter-term bonds will protect you against big losses if interest rates rise sharply.   You didn’t say what percentage of your retirement plan is in bonds, but I would suggest that you have 2X in stocks as in bonds, and that you keep about 20 percent in a money fund, just so you can sleep well at night!
