Can businesses refuse to accept cash?

By Terry Savage on January 11, 2025 | Wild Card

Hi Terry…we once worked together at WMAQ-TV and as I recall, I believed no one cared about things like T-bonds and CD rates. Shows how much I knew!

Anyway, I’ve noticed more and more businesses are refusing to handle cash…even my own Post Office on occasion. I thought that cash was king and had to be accepted for any transaction. I’m an old curmudgeon who hates to pay for minor expenses with a credit card.

Hope you are well throughout the New Year…God help us!

Yep, the cost of doing transactions in cash, and physically taking it to the bank, are causing many businesses to just stop using cash. I see that all the time at the coffee shop in the WGN Radio building, and it annoys me to put just a few dollars on my credit card. But that’s the way the world is going now! At least you can earn miles, or points, or cash back when you use your card!

Great to hear from you, Art!
