Car Title

By Terry Savage on March 12, 2020 | Wild Card

Hello. My husband is getting a new car. We are deciding if he or both of us should be on the title of the car we are purchasing. It is an expensive car but we are paying it outright so no loan to worry about. We were going to put it in his name only but what happens if something happens to him? Is it just best to put both of our names on the title? We live in Illinois. Thanks

A car is personal property. Unless one of you is planning to run off with it, I don’t see the value of having both names on the title. However, there can be two names on a title separated by and OR or. State laws differ however basically when registering a vehicle and the names are joined by the word “or,” one owner can sell the vehicle without the other’s signature or consent. Just something to think about.
