Ask Terry Questions CD vrs Treasuries

CD vrs Treasuries

By Terry Savage on September 19, 2026 | Chicken Money

Good morning. I noticed you recommend Treasuries rather then CDs. I am 80 and wonder which is safer/better and why? Thank you in advance.

Terry Says

Your bank CDs are insured by the Federal government up to $500,000 by the FDIC and T-bills are a direct obligation of the U.S. government. There is no state income tax on T-bill interest, if that matters to you. And there are times, like currently, when 6-month Tbills (how yielding a bit over 4%) pay more than most bank CDs.
