Child tax credit
I haven’t worked since 2018. I dont have earned income. My daughter claims me and my 16 yr old son on her taxes. Should she file for the child care credit even tho she got those early payments. Or shld I file and claim it. Plse advise

Next week I will post a column explaining the ins and outs of the child tax credit. Your daughter probably only received 6 months — if that — of the child tax credit when it started paying out on a monthly basis. So yes, she must claim the balance on her tax return as a refundable credit.
She should also make sure she received her $1400 stimulus money for her son –and that YOU received YOUR $1400 stimulus last spring. If not, even though YOU did not make any money, you should file your own return and ask for the $1400 payment to be sent to your bank account.
And finally, if she provides your care and claims you and your son on her tax return, she should file for the Child CARE Credit — if she is paying someone to provide care while she works. That’s a completely separate program, and you can read about it in next week’s column that will soon be posted on my website.
