Cobra Payments from the Government

Good day,
Terry mentioned on the channel 9 news this morning the Government is offering Cobra Health Insurance payment to employees that lost their job due to Covid-19 and enrolled in a Cobra health insurance plan. My company sponsored insurance ended on 12/26/20 so I enrolled in Cobra during open enrollment to get coverage for 2021. My previous employer quoted $285 per month on their website during open enrollment. I received my first Cobra statement, the monthly rate was, $650, double what I was quoted on the company’s website. I received a second statement; the monthly rate was $1,110 per month. I filed an appeal with my former employer but I haven’t heard back. Can you provide a link that provides access to enroll in the Government Cobra payment plan ? Many thanks for responding to this request.

Well, you’re not going to like my answer. They are creating the system for having the government reimburse companies for COBRA. But since your company doesn’t seem to be very concerned about this issue, you will probably have a problem getting them to give you the insurance and get repaid from the government. Does your former have more than 20 employees? If so, they fall under the COBRA provisions of the Department of Labor. So a threatening letter to the CEO or President, saying you are filing a claim with the Labor Department, first to complain about the different charges you were quoted for COBRA and second because of their lack of responsiveness and you want to get the FREE COBRA starting April 1st.

Please write back and let me knwo if that moves them off their position. Maybe a call from a journalist would be required. This is a real issue and you deserve to be taken seriously.
