Ask Terry Questions communicating with the IRS

communicating with the IRS

By Terry Savage on December 30, 2022 | Taxes & Economy

My tax man filed my return electronically in April a few weeks later I discovered the social security number was wrong, he filed a1040X, to date I have not heard from the IRS, when going to their web site I get a note saying it can’t be processed. How do I get it touch with them? You would think after 8 months they would send something to me asking for some information. Any thing you can do to help me will be appreciated

Oh, you’re caught in a bad trap. First thing is to establish an “ID.me” account with the IRS.
Here’s how to do it — read this: https://www.terrysavage.com/create-an-irs-account-for-info/

Looking at that account will let you know as much as if you talked with someone at the IRS. It will show the status of your return and correction. Then you just have to be patient. There is no other way to connect with them.

Was the mistake on the part of your tax preparer, or did you give him the wrong SS number?
Were you expecting a refund that is delayed? If because of HIS error, then he should “lend” you the amount until your return is clarified. Tell him that was my suggestion. It’s the least he can do!!
