Covid-19 Stimulus Checks for 19 year old

By Terry Savage on April 06, 2020 | Wild Card

1. Is it true that the amount of money we receive on our stimulus check will be deducted from the refund we get on our 2020 taxes?
2. We have a son in college, who we claim as a dependent. He also files his own taxes. We saw on WGN News that you mentioned something about him being able to get a check afterall. What do we have to do to make sure he gets it?

Terry Says

This is a GIFT. It will not be deducted next year.
Children over 17 do not qualify for the $500 stimulus payment on your return.
If you amend your return to remove him as a dependent –and THEN he files as an individual, he can get $1200.
But if both of you have already filed for 2019 it will be a real hassle. He would have to amend his return too — and that could screw the whole thing up. So you owe him $1200!
