CP-80 IRS Notice

I read your article. I got my CP-80 letter yesterday (surprise!). The experience you described almost matches mine. I sent my 2020 tax return to the IRS around mid-February. They also cashed my check for the taxes I owed.
And, of course, the IRS letter arrives when my account’s office is closed. So I’ll have to wait until Monday.

Another good reason for always sending things to the IRS by registered mail, return receipt requested.
