Credit card dispute
I have a hotel reservation up north in Wisconsin, (we go snomobileing) reservation is from 2023, which we could not go because trails never opened they were kind enough to push the date out to this year, they are telling me if we do not come up next month, we will not only lose the deposit but the whole reservation of almost $1,000. In the contract,it does state they can charge the full amount, what are my options? Cancel the credit card,so they can charge the full amount? My whole thing is if there is no snow. We aren’t going to make the long drive. Appreciate any help, I enjoy your advice on WGN news, thank you.

This is a tough one, because technically they DO have the right to charge your card, which is a warning to others who might make similar reservations. You can tell them that you spoke to a consumer newspaper reporter who told you to make a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) — and maybe they will only charge the deposit, and not add the unused amount. I’ll bet that’s how it will work out. If they do insist on charging the full amount, let me know!
You can also contact the card issuer and tell them you dispute the charge of the full amount if they go ahead and do that. I’m not sure, depending on the language in your reservation, whether you’d win that battle.
