Credit report entry

By Terry Savage on March 16, 2020 | Wild Card

I saw a rheumatologist and he was rude and ultimately told me to go back to where I came from. I was humiliated and hurt. I cried and told the nurses. I owe $248. I tried to speak to office manager, ignored and sent to collection. Now credit score took a drastic plunge. I don’t want to pay this bill. Is it not worth it. Please advise.

Oh this is terrible. You can’t simply ignore a bill because you were insulted — although this certainly was a terrible experience. Now your credit report is suffering because of it. The physician has clearly turned this over to a collection agency. My advice is to contact them, and pay the balance. It might include interest, and perhaps they will settle for less than the full amount. But this blot will stay on your credit report for 7 years, and impact your cost of borrowing.

Next time you have a dispute with a physician, take it to the American Medical Association, or post a review on Yelp, or on Healthgrades.com or on RateMDs.com. OR just get a sign and picket the doctor’s office! But to you — and others who might feel inclined to not pay the bill in a situation like this — the damage will fall on you, not the physician.
