Debt /budget advice for young family

By Terry Savage on June 12, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

What type of a professional would I look for to help guide/advise a young couple with 3 children who are in over their heads with credit card debt, child care costs, mortgage etc. They both work full time but don’t seem to know how to prioritize their true needs or have a clue about budgeting. I’m willing to pay for them to meet with someone who can advise with an unbiased view (better than me!) but I don’t think I’m looking for a credit card relief company. Hopefully you can point me in the right direction-Thanks Much!

They seem to need more than a book or a website. So I’d start here, with MoneyManagementInternational.org.

They are a non-profit member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (800-388-2227) and they have a good program to work through these issues, helping set up a budget. They also do “debt-management” — but that probably isn’t a necessary service in this case.

And if you do want to use a book, this is the very best workbook: Judy Lawrence’s The Budget Kit. Click here to buy on Amazon.
Maybe start with getting organized about their payments first — by filling in the blanks!
