Deceased Mom Stimulus Check
Our Mom passed away 3/7/19. She received a stimulus check. The outside of the envelope states Forgery of endorsements is a Federal crime. Maximum penalty $10,000 fine and 10 years imprisonment. What do we do with this check?
Terry Says
The IRS has told me that if a tax form was filed by a decedent, they (or their estate) get the stimulus check. In fact, some checks are being made out to the estate of the decedent (presumably the estate filed a 2019 tax return)! If the estate is still open, then deposit the check in that account. If not, any of the beneficiaries can deposit it and share it with the other beneficiaries. There is no tax consequence so no problem sharing, but do so by check so no heir will make a fuss!
