Ask Terry Questions declaring taxes on unemployment

declaring taxes on unemployment

By Terry Savage on March 03, 2021 | Wild Card

Do i need anything from the government or Illinois dept of unemployment showing what I made from not working this year? Also, how do I get it? I did have them take the taxes out before I received my benefits in 2020-is that why I never received a 1099 from ides? Thank you

If you go online to the IDES website, there is supposed to be a place where you can file your claimant number and download a 1099G form, which tells you how much you were paid, and how much was withheld. But many people are having trouble finding this form, or even getting into their account. It’s another illustration of the IDES mess!
If you can’t find the form, you can put your name on the list for a callback. Not guaranteed they will help either!
And if you’re in a rush to file, and claim that $600 stimulus, you could estimate (based on deposit records) the total amount of benefits you were paid, and also the amount withheld. If it doesn’t match up with what the IRS gets from IDES, they will contact you and you can explain that you couldn’t get the 1099G so you estimated.
