Defined Outcome ETFs

By Terry Savage on December 12, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

What are your thoughts on the Defined Outcome ETFs (or Buffer ETFs)? We are nearing retirement (in 2-5 years) and wondering if it would be prudent to include these as part of our investment portfolio.
Also, I am not sure if it matters or not, but we do not have annuities as part of our current portfolio. Does a consideration of annuities vs. Define Outcome ETFs even come into play?
If your answer matters relative to our specific situation, we are nearing 3 million dollars in assets (excluding our home’s value); we have no traditional pension.

My personal opinion is that you’re getting way too sophisticated — OR someone is trying to sell you some expensive products as “protection.”
Instead, may I suggest you meet with a fee-only FIDUCIARY advisor who is not trying to sell you anything!

At this stage of your life, your “asset allocation” and diversification (and “chicken money”) is far more important than limiting your market exposure with the products you describe.
