Ask Terry Questions Dependent Stimulus Check

Dependent Stimulus Check

By Terry Savage on April 06, 2020 | Wild Card

Hey Terry how are you. I’m 20 years old and filed my own taxes. But my parents claimed me for school purposes on their taxes. Will I still receive a stimulus check?

Terry Says

No, you won’t! Ask them to amend their return and remove you as a dependent! Have them do it first, and then amend your own return so you won’t be a dependent. But theirs must be done first.
They get nothing from the stimulus for having you as a dependent, since you are over 17. And removing you won’t impact their taxes much. But it will give you a chance to get the check!
Have them do theirs today — OR tell them they owe you $1200!
