Ask Terry Questions Disability payments

Disability payments

By Terry Savage on July 16, 2024 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Hello, Terri! We spoke a few weeks ago, when Jon Hansen filled
in on WGN for John Williams. I did not claim SSDI in 2004 when I had to quit working due to a decline in my health, but after a Double Lung Transplant was recommended by a Pulmonology Transplant Surgeon and I was given a 2-year prognosis without one, I wanted to know if I could begin receiving SS pmts. earlier than age 65. (I’m 59)

I don’t understand why you didn’t file for Social Security Disability a long time ago!   Am I missing something in your question?   I would surely apply now.  It may take a couple of years to get approved.  Start here:   How You Qualify | Disability Benefits | SSA

Then when you reach retirement age, your SSDI benefits automatically convert into retirement benefits:  EN-05-10153.pdf (ssa.gov)
