Divorced women and GPO

By Terry Savage on January 09, 2025 | Wild Card

When I applied for social security years ago, I had to bring in my marriage and divorce papers and my ex’s social security number. Because of my government pension, I could not receive any money from his social security. My question is, are my papers still on file with the administration? Or do I have to apply again for social security based on his pension.

Terry Says

Gosh, they aren’t good at keeping track of stuff like that. Just go ahead and apply again in a few weeks when they are starting to get reprogrammed. Your benefit will not be reduced because of your government pension. And this assumes that half of his benefit is larger than any SS benefit you might get based on a record of covered work (in addition to your non-covered teaching work).
