Ask Terry Questions double payment to IRS

double payment to IRS

By Terry Savage on August 15, 2021 | Wild Card

In March of this year I inadvertently paid my due income taxes twice to the IRS. It is now August and they have not contacted me or refunded the overpayment. How do I get this money back from the IRS or who can I contact?

Whew, that’s a tough one! The IRS keeps careful track of overpayments — but they are having trouble just getting regular refunds out right now. I’m afraid you’ll have to consider this a “loan” to the IRS until you owe taxes next year! If you make quarterly estimated payments, then you can reduce them to zero until you work off the overpayment. If you get a regular paycheck, you can reduce your withholding, knowing they already have your money. And any leftover amount, you can apply to next year’s return — and ask for a refund then.
