Economic Impact Payment Card
I and my sister and her spouse have received debit cards from Money Network LLC supposedly containing “the money you are receiving from the U.S. Treasury under the COVID-related Tax Relief Act of 2020.” I have done nothing with mine. My sister went to her bank and even though it was made out in her name and her husband’s, activated, it only gave her a $500+ deposit to her account rather than the combined $1200 they should have received.
To me nothing about this looks authentic. A fee was deducted for depositing it in her account. Why would the Treasury outsource this to a private company?
While I received a paper check for the original COVID relief, the government does have my deposit information on file through SS and NGS. Because I pay estimated taxes my deposit information is not current with the IRS.
If this is a valid disbursement, can I not use it and take a credit on my tax return for not using it?
Many thanks for any clarification you can offer.

Many people are NOT receiving checks but instead — in a plain white envelope with the U.S. Treasury logo — they get a navy blue Visa debit card with silver stars on it, and the words MetaBank and Money Network on it. That is the stimulus.
If it is less money than expected, file the 2020 tax return and on Line 30 ask for the balance you think is owed to you.
