EE paper savings bonds. Is there a problem w/ the treasury savings bond calculator?

By Terry Savage on March 06, 2023 | Chicken Money

Why is the value of a $200 (face value) EE savings bond at maturity is now valued at $328.24 in March 2023 when a similar $200 bond cashed in February paid $414.72? Why were all $200 savings bonds that were cashed in previous years, all been valued at $414.72? What changed? Is there a problem with the Treasury’s savings bond calculator? Can you provide me with an answer or solution to this problem? I am holding my bond redemptions until this issue is resolved. The difference between This February’s value and the potential March valuation is $86.48 in lost interest. My wife and I still have $1000’s of bonds to be redeemed, and we would hate to forfeit this difference in interest over time. Could you please help?

Terry Says

Maybe the bond you are checking hasn’t matured yet — and hasn’t stopped paying interest. Or maybe you purchased it later and lower floor or variable rates applied. Check on the base rate when it was originally purchased and compare with those older bonds. That probably accounts for the discrepancy. The Treasury department does not make mistakes in its calculations!
