EE Savings Bonds matured — how do I redeem?

By Terry Savage on September 09, 2022 | Chicken Money

Hi Terry, I have 30 years of matured EE Savings Bonds at 4% each, what is the best way to redeem them tax wise.

Thanks,

Go to www.TreasuryDirect.gov and check to see if they have matured. Here’s the direct link to that spot on the website.
Also click the link to their “Treasury hunt” feature to find specific bond values and how to redeem them.

You are supposed to cash in these bonds in the year they mature. But if you have a slew of them, cashing them in could increase your income to a higher tax bracket — and maybe impact your Medicare Part B premium by raising your income. So a lot of people just spread out the redemption over a couple of years to avoid that problem.
