Ask Terry Questions elder abuse

elder abuse

By Terry Savage on November 22, 2019 | Wild Card

My 85 year old father is being taken by a 38 year old woman. She claims she has cancer and her monthly medicine is very expensive. She is getting money from my father. Is there anything legal I can do here, since my father has used ALL his money and maxed out ALL his credit cards to give money to that woman.

You need to find an attorney who specializes in this area. Go to www.NAELA.org — the elder law attorneys association. You may have to have your father declared incompetent by a court, and take over his income (likely only Social Security, from what you describe.) You can be aggressive and change his locks, take away his phone, and call the card issuers to ask them to close the card because it has been “stolen” if you want to be aggressive! (It’s not legal, but it could stop the bleeding!). But likely you will need an attorney to help you. Don’t hesitate — not for your sake, but for his!
