Electronic Filing of Federal Tax Return
Hello Terry. My wife had me listen to an interview with on (I believe on WGN) where you stated that people “Must” file their returns electronically. I believe the intent was that you’ll have a much higher assurance that the return will be processed promptly, but it is not actually a requirement. Is that correct? Regardless, I’m struggling to figure out how to file electronically. We have W-2 as well and self employment income and our Adjusted Gross income exceeds the limit that the IRS has for their e filing. It appears that I either have to purchase deluxe or premium versions of software or go through a tax preparer. Am I missing something? If not, what are your suggestions? Software would probably need to be updated annually and the use of a preparer is an added expense and effort. Thank you.

I said “must” as in — if you want your return processed efficiently. If you are capable of preparing your own paper return, and don’t get a refund, sure go ahead and give the IRS more work!
I suggest that most tax prep firms will file it for you electronically — and make sure there are no mistakes and that you get all your deductions. Ever hear the old saying: “penny wise and pound foolish”?
