Employment Benefits

By Terry Savage on January 04, 2021 | Wild Card

Hi Ms. Savage,

My wife was laid off recently because of Covid and is currently collecting unemployment. She was offered a freelance job for a few weeks and they pay her more than what she’d get from unemployment so we just assumed she wouldn’t collect anything for those weeks she worked. The last time she filed, she reported her income like she’s supposed and now she’s getting an error message saying that she needs to file an additional claim? We don’t know what that means? That job was only for a couple of weeks and now she’s freaking out now because she’s worried she lost her unemployment benefits. The IDES website/contact # has been zero help so thank you in advance. Honestly the way this state works, I’m not sure how we’d survive any of this without someone like you. Thanks again.

You should be able to RE-OPEN that claim on the IDES website, but they are so messed up that you may be stuck in limbo until they give you a callback. It’s demoralizing to realize they want you to demonstrate efforts to get work — but if you DO get even a bit of work it ruins your unemployment payouts, not only for those weeks but for however long it takes you to get it straightened out! Sorry I can’t be of more help.
