Equifax data breach settlement email

By Terry Savage on December 12, 2024 | Wild Card

Today I received an email stating I received an “additional settlement payment” of $14.87 and instructions on how to receive the payment. I did get notified long ago that my data was exposed during the breach (and I’ve kept my credit frozen ever since). First of all, I don’t recall receiving any payment prior to this so I don’t know why it would be an “additional” payment. The instructions send me to https://www.equifaxbreachsettlement.com/
I am reasonably sure – but not positive! -that this is not a hoax. I certainly don’t want to risk my security for $15. Do you know if this is on the up and up? And is there a downside to me accepting the payment – like it means I forever and ever absolve Equifax of accountability for their lapses that caused the breach?

I can provide more information if you need. Thanks so much for any insight you can provide!

This website is set up to distribute claims under a court settlement. You can’t “give up your rights” because that was all settled in court. You probably did receive a small prior settlement. Your post doesn’t say what you are instructed to do upon receipt of this notice. And the website doesn’t provide information on that. What were the instructions?
