Fed tax on social security check
Hello Terry,
I was told by my taxman that I do not need to file income tax, my only income is S.S.
I made $27,000 last year, from the time I started collecting my S.S I had them take out tax, that came to $2,250 My question is, can I tell them to stop taking out the tax and have that money go into the check I receive, that still will keep me below $30,000 for the year.
Thank you for your time, looking forward to your answer.

Sit down with your tax person and go over your 2025 return. Because of the extra $6,000 exemption for seniors this year, you may find that you are actually entitled to a REFUND. That means you would have to file a tax return for 2025, and some or all of the taxes that were withheld from your SS check would come back to you.
At the same time, and presuming the credit also exists for 2026, you can prepare for next year’s tax obligation. Your tax advisor can tell you how much — if any — taxes should be withheld from your SS benefits. I’m guessing that you won’t need to withhold this year, either. But each situation is different so make an appointment and get the specific figures.
