Federal Cares Stimulus check – divorce issues

By Terry Savage on April 01, 2020 | Wild Card

I was recently divorced (12/02/19) and filed my 2018 taxes jointly, the refund was send via paper check. My 2019 taxes have already been filed (singly) and I have received my refund via direct deposit. My ex has not yet filed the 2019 taxes therefore I am wondering how it would be determined what the stimulus check amount will be and where it will be sent. Another issue is we have 2 children (a 14 yr old daughter and a 23 yr old son with special needs), per my divorce documents I claimed my daughter and my ex is to claim my son. I am concerned how will the government know that I am to receive the $500 for my daughter (possibly as I claimed her as my dependent on my 2019 taxes) and my ex is to receive the $500 for our son. Any advice you can provide will be much appreciated even if it means providing me with someone to contact. Thank you.

You’re just fine. You’ll get $1200 because your income in 2019 was under the limit. And you’ll get $500 for your daughter. And because you are getting your refund by direct deposit, your stimulus check will come the same way! You don’t have to do anything but wait!!

If you care about your ex, tell him to file 2019 NOW, and claim your son.
