Ask Terry Questions Federal Income Tax Return and stimulus

Federal Income Tax Return and stimulus

By Terry Savage on May 16, 2020 | Wild Card

Dear Terry,

I filed my taxes on February 10, 2020 by registered mail. They signed for it on February 13, 2020. I had to mail because my husband passed away on February 18, 2019. I am on one check, a senior citizen and I have a flooding issue, so the money is dearly needed. I know Covid 19 is overwhelming the IRS office, but I thought I would have received my refund before all of this stimulus assistance hit. My stimulus is also held-up, because my tax return has not been processed. I called the number, 1-800-829-1040, but the office is not accepting calls. Please help me find out the status of my return and stimulus checks. The website only responds that my return is being processed. Filled jointly. Direct deposit. I do not know what to do?

I am sorry to have to contact you, but I do not know what else to do? Thank you for making this communication available to me.

Regards,

I hate to give you my standard answer — be patient! You filed a paper return and your stimulus will come by paper check to the same address. And it could take weeks! But if you also happen to get Social Security it might come in the next three weeks, by direct deposit the same way you get your benefits.
The money WILL come — but this is going to take a while. The IRS website is seriously messed up, so don’t aggravate yourself by going there!
