Fell for a SCAM!!

By Terry Savage on November 07, 2022 | Wild Card

A friend of mine (age 75) was victim…I think it was a ‘new’ one. (information below)
Thanks to listening to you on WGN Radio and the old days when you were on Channel 5, I got everything done (new bank accounts, credit cards cancelled, Home Equity Line of Credit frozen, and froze her credit on all of three credit agencies. Of course it was done on Friday at 4pm…I’ll just say I might have broken some laws driving to pick her up and drive her to the bank before they closed.
Nonetheless, Judy left windows open and walked away. I have pictures of those windows which might give authorities information on who did this. I won’t post them here (lots of personal information), but my ultimate question is ‘who do I send these pictures/screen shots to?’
The event: Judy got a call from ‘XFinity’ saying “We notice your internet is slow, and we want to fix it, and we’ll give you $500 in your bank account since we should have done this earlier.” They had her download “UltraViewer” v 6.5.31 so they could access her computer and ‘fix it’. Judy said yes to all the prompts. They ‘accidentally’ did $5000 instead of $500 (I have the screen shot). When it turned to ‘sorry, you can pay us back in $4500 in gift cards’. She questioned why. Then they pulled up her bank account and she sat and watched as her checking account went down to $0 balance and her savings account went to $0 balance. They said: “It’s ok, that’s the first step in correcting the mistake, but we still need you to go get $1400 in gift cards.” A few more questions from Judy about what’s going on, etc., and they eventually hung up.
Yes, Judy was ‘stupid’ to let some outside caller take control of her computer (I’m STILL mad at her…she knows to call me first before ANY change in computer). Nonetheless, I have pictures of screens with their login, the Comcast account number used (from them), and then some. (She froze, left the computer, and called me.) Where do I send it?
Hope to call in on Wednesday on WGN Radio to share, but never know what the topic is going to be, and given it’s the day after the election, I have a feeling you won’t be taking calls about Identity Theft.
Thanks for all you do for us listeners. Know that you’re helping us more than you probably think you are.

Terry Says

Gosh, if this is for real, I’m posting this as a WARNING to others. And I copied your post and am sending it to my friend at the FBI for comment, which I will add to this post.
But I suggest she call 800-CALL-FBI to report this! And of course, she must report it to her bank.
