Filing taxes and can’t get IDES 1099-G

By Terry Savage on May 06, 2021 | Wild Card

Hi Terry,
I’m helping a friend finally file their tax returns (Fed and IL) and they will be getting a sizeable refund of 1000-2000 dollars.

I have all of the needed information for him to file, except he cannot login to get a copy of his IL IDES 1099G – probably because his password changed or he forgot it. He is in the callback queue but I’m doubting that he’ll get the needed information by 5/17 to file. He had the debit card for IDES so we can’t look at his direct deposits to figure it out.

I was thinking of just putting an amount like 5000 dollars in for IL unemployment with no withholding of unemployment taxes since he doesn’t know. At least then we can get his filing started, and then once we obtain his 1099G file amended.

Would you recommend this?
Or if not what would you recommend?
And is there a place / how can we “note” on the electronic filing (turbo tax) this unemployment benefit estimation due to IDES incompetence and ineptitude of not providing us the information?

Thank you!

That is exactly the right strategy. He is not alone in not being able to reach IDES. But have him go through the deposits so you at least get a fairly accurate amount of benefits received. The IRS will get an electronic tape from IDES and will certainly contact him when the numbers don’t match. And yes, I’m told there is a place on the TT form to note this, just not sure where!
