Ask Terry Questions Florida residency

Florida residency

By Terry Savage on September 22, 2021 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I recently moved to Florida and got my Florida DL. I will live there 6 months in 2021? (Full time since (8/12)

I did receive 8 months of unemployment from Ides in 2921.

Can I file my 2021state taxes in Florida? Do I have to tell Illinois that I moved? Thanks.

Terry Says

You’ll have to ask a tax expert, but since you lived in Illinois and received unemployment compensation in Illinois, I’m sure the smart thing to do is file an Illinois tax return for 2021 next April.
In the future, to claim Florida residency, you should not only get your FL Drivers License, but make sure all your bank statements and retirement accounts have your Florida address. And this is a good time to change your will or estate plan to your Florida residence. And by all means, register to vote at your Florida address.

And if you have Medicare, change your address. And if you have a supplement plan, contact them to change your address (which might result in a slightly higher premium.) So you can wait until 2022 to do that.

All of that will prove your intention to be a full time resident –so you won’t file a tax return in Illinois for the next year, 2022.

If you have a homeowners exemption or a senior freeze exemption in Illinois, contact the assessor’s office NEXT year, and tell them you have moved. Other than that, you don’t have to report your departure.
