Follow up: New Investment from Inheritance

By Terry Savage on May 16, 2025 | Investments

I have inherited $500K from sale of paternal properties, which is in a money market account earning 4% APY. I would to invest it in an SP Index Fund for several years. The stock market seems to have recovered in the last 1 month. Is it good time to invest? If not, approximately much longer should I wait to invest midst tariff talks, impact on earnings and subsequent Index volatility?

Well, I wish I had a crystal ball to answer that question! Sounds like you want some pretty basic investment strategy which you can do yourself at Fidelity or Vanguard.

But I don’t know your age, stage oflife, and what this windfall represents to your financial future. So may I suggest that you have at least one meeting with a fee-only FIDUCIARY financial advisor. The only way I can be sure you won’t get ripped off by someone who calls himself/herself a fiduciary is to use this link:

And if you’re determined to do it on your own, please just move 10% at a time from the money market fund into the stock market — doing it over the next 10 months. It’s called dollar-cost-averaging.
