Fraudulent IDES claim results in 1099G

By Terry Savage on February 18, 2022 | Wild Card

I just received a 1099G, showing my wife had received a (taxible) payment of $4678. We did not receive this payment and I assume it was obtained fraudulently by some one else.
I have called IDES 800 244-5631 six times over the past 4 days, but they appear to be swamped with this problem.
What is the best way to reach IDES ? What info will I need to satisfactorily prove that we did not receive this payment? Then will they issue a corrected 1099G?
Thank you,

The odds are you will NEVER get a corrected 1099G from Illinois. But you can try sending a registered letter and keeping a copy. Also keep track of your attempts to contact them.

The IRS and State will get an electronic record of this 1099–and you will explain to them after you file without including this amount. For sure, they will reach out about this. Then you can justify the fact that she did not claim, or receive, any unemployment benefits.

After all that fraud, this was inevitable. And once again, the state is woefully lacking in setting up a way of dealing with this issue that is starting to affect so many.

In the meantime, it’s important to find out if other elements of your identity have been stolen. Please read this article and do everything it suggests– starting by reading your credit report to see if there are any unknown accounts or bank inquiries.
