Fraudulent taxes filed
My daughter found out that someone had fraudulently filed her taxes for 2020. Her tax man filled out the forms on-line last year and she sent the paper tax return. She keeps getting letters from the IRS asking for more documentation of income and deductions. What should she do next. One more thing, her tax man retired and will not do anything else for her

Oh, what a horrible situation. It’s happening to more and more people. Did they ask her to create a PIN to file that paper return? Is she getting responses? It could take quite a while to sort this out. If she is getting nowhere, she should contact the Taxpayer Advocate’s office at: https://www.irs.gov/taxpayer-advocate
Now, the question is whether they will accept her 2021 return electronically. She should try to file that as soon as possible. Filing season starts this coming week.
And by now she has surely locked up her credit. But she should read this column on identity theft to make sure she has done everything possible.
This is going to take patience to unravel.
