Furlough/ Unemployment-effect on Social Security

By Terry Savage on June 26, 2020 | Wild Card

Hi Terry. My husband, who will be eligible to collect full Social Security next April, has been furloughed from his employer of 35 years (hopefully for only 6 months). How will unemployment affect his Social Security benefits?

Terry Says

He can still collect unemployment if he qualifies. Social security does not impact unemployment benefits —
And by next April, he will have run out of unemployment benefits!
BUT if he had a pension from the company he left, it would impact unemployment benefits.
