General Obligation Illinois College Saving Bond that matured years ago.

By Terry Savage on November 14, 2020 | Wild Card

This is an odd question, however I thought I would ask…
I am wondering if you know how I can find out if I cashed out a State of Illinois General Obligation College Savings Bond from September 1991. I came across a photocopy of it. Registered owners are my husband and myself. It would have been for Daughter, give the dates. It matured on 08/01/2001.
If I didn’t do anything, it would be nice to give it to my daughter for her current college expenses.

Thank you and Stay Well!

I bought some of those bonds back in the day. They were a great tax-free investment. They were sold at a discount (like the old savings bonds0 and matured to face value. As I recall, the transfer agent was First Chicago, now Chase Bank. I just sent an email to my contact there, who has been at the bank for many years, asking if they still have any responsibility and records re those old bonds. If he comes back with any info I will forward it to you. But your chances are slim, since you only have the photocopy, not the paper bonds that were issued.
