Graduated College Student (May, 1 2020), Still job seeking – Stimulus rebate?

By Terry Savage on February 07, 2021 | Wild Card

I have a 23 year old son who is still job seeking in his field. He did not earn enough last year to file income tax for 2020. Should I file for him anyway? (He is still listed as my dependent on my 2020 taxes).
Will he qualify for any Stimulus checks?

Love listening to you won WGN. I refer people to your website all the time.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

Terry Says

NO NO NO!!! Do NOT file your 2020 tax erturn with him as a dependent. that would cost him both the first $1200 check and the current $600!! If he can demonstrate he earned any money he should file his own return and claim the stimulus on Line 30. But he can not do that if he is a dependent on your 2020 return!
