How to find a ticker symbol on a 401k choice

My 401k used to supply ticker symbols to one could track that investment but no longer. When I call the 401k plan handler I am told they do not have them nor do annuities. Would like to know why 401k’s and annuities will not supply ticker symbols for easy monitoring.
