How to get a refund for 2020 unemployment taxes paid

By Terry Savage on September 20, 2022 | Taxes & Economy

Hi Terry,
My husband and I were both furloughed for a period in 2020 and received unemployment income. We had IDES take out the state and federal taxes owed, prior to issuing us checks (a big mistake!) Now, how do we get that deducted money back?

We’ve already filed our 2020 and 2021 taxes and they have been accepted. In looking at our 2020 taxes, I see where we reported the full unemployment income and also where the full amount was taken out, so as to not be calculated in taxes, but nowhere was there somewhere that address taxes already paid on it. Per your response to another inquiry in your “Ask Terry” section, I did create ID.me accounts to see if I could see anything addressing the additional refund, but I do not see anything. Any advice??

That adjustment was supposed to be made automatically — but they aren’t finished yet. My suggestion is to claim that amount as a refund when you file next April, assuming they haven’t sent it to you by then.
