IDES question about self-employed

By Terry Savage on May 09, 2020 | Wild Card

I am a self employed private music lesson instructor (voice and piano) I teach private lessons in 4 area high schools and had to stop All lessons due to the schools being closed, due to COVID19. I am paid by each student’s family, NOT the school district. I have filed for unemployment and was denied due to “not earning enough wages to qualify.” This IS my full time job and I earn $1760 a week. I had 80 students taking lessons in March and all would have continued through May.
I have tried MANY times to call IDES and I can not get through to a person. I believe I DO qualify, I probably need to send proof of income to someone, but I don’t know who to send it to and I don’t know how to get to speak to a person. PLEASE HELP, THANK YOU!!

Two pieces of good news for you. First, they IDES is opening a new call center this coming week, so you should get through. BUT before you even try that, the IDES is creating a new section of its website for the “self-employed” unemployed — which is YOU! Starting Monday look for the words PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) which is part of the Care’s act. It will be better equipped to manage your claim –as long as you reported your income for tax purposes as self-employed in the past!
