IDES supplemental $300/400 weekly benefit–payment retroactive?

By Terry Savage on September 14, 2020 |

Hi Terry: First time I listened to your show that was recommended by a friend. It’s really helpful information. Thank you. I was on hold with a question but you ran up against the clock: If IL applies for the Fed’s announced $300/400 weekly unemployment supplement, but is not approved until say mid-September, does the $300 or 400 weekly boost begin in mid September or will there be a lump sum retro pmt of $300/wk paid going back to the program announcement date. I read that many states have already applied and some have been approved. That retro pmt would obviously be super helpful to everyone (including me), but I cannot figure out the answer. Thank you Terry. A new fan,

Well, my response is “don’t hold your breath”! Illinois will have to completely reprogram its computers to get that supplement paid out. And given their track record — and the fact that I’m still getting tearful questions from people who NEVER received well-deserved unemployment under the first program — I have serious doubts about whether those $400 payments will be forthcoming on ANY basis.
AND, there was just enough money taken from the federal disaster relief fund to make it last for a few months — and, of course, that means less money for wildfires in the West! It was a political ploy and especially in Illinois it’s for sure going to be a disappointing mess.
