Ind Contractor – unemployment, PPP, unemployment

By Terry Savage on May 14, 2020 | Wild Card

I’m a meeting planner and will be out of planning work indefinitely. I’ve applied for PUA unemployment which will back date to whatever date. I’m about finalized for PPP funding which will sustain me for 8 weeks. After the 8-weeks of PPP, do you know if I’m eligible to re-certify for unemployment since i’m never overlapping unemployment and PPP? Thank you

Terry Says

Yes, you are eligible to re-certify and do not have to file a new claim. (This is info if you are in Illinois, and I’m pretty sure the same applies in other states.) But you might want to ask your accountant and/or financial planner whether you really want to take that PPP loan! If you call back some workers (which is what you must do with the loan money) they may be angry that they get more on unemployment! And the same may apply to YOU! And the Federal $600/week ends July 25th. So you might be better off not taking the loan if you can get the unemployment benefits!
