Index funds beat most managed funds over the past 5 and 10 year periods. Or, put more appropriately, the vast majority of managers failed to beat their index benchmarks. Index funds are inexpensive. So you save on fees. But when the "market" falls, index funds will most certainly fall as well. They are "the market." It's your job to decide how much of your money should be invested in the market.
