Her and I will still be on my union Insurance until I retire in about 3 years. does she still sign up for medicare 3 months before she turns 65 and then just not activate it? a friend sign up late and he says they charge him more know? She is going to start taking social security in May. Thank You Love you on AM 720

First, your wife should NOT take Social Security before her full retirement age. Just use some of your savings to bridge the gap until she is 67. Taking SS early is a huge mistake, costing about 8% a year in benefits, and giving her a permanently lower base on which COLAs will be paid.

Second, yes, she should sign up for Medicare Part A at age 65 — and then ask them to review your union policy coverage to make sure she doesn’t need to sign up for Part B and a supplement. Likely that will not be necessary until you retire, as your coverage will provide what Part B usually does. But it can’t hurt to check.
