Investment fees and costs.
Hello! I read your article in the Chicago Tribune about looking into and understanding how much I pay in investment fees and costs. I inquired with my broker about these specific costs. My question is, what percentage is a guide of how much these fees should be or are appropriate? Liked your column. Thank you!
Terry Says
If it’s just money management and no underlying fees, it should come to about 1% annually. Less, if you have a larger account.
But then add in the up-front purchase charges, or ask if there are exit charges on your investments, and as noted in the article, the percentage charged to the fund shares themselves by the fund manager!! All of this adds up!
Please write back and let me know what you find! I’d like to print it –though I won’t use your name.
